The Hue Citadel faces the Huong River, which is oftentimes referred to as the Perfume River. This river is to the southeast of the citadel. This masterpiece of a complex combines design concepts from the Chinese and the military principles of Sebastian de Vauban, who was a French architect. The results include gorgeous temples, massive palaces, and intricate details that have not been replicated anywhere else in the world.

There is a lot of walking involved inside Imperial City, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and have plenty of water with you to drink.
One of the first things you will see within this area is the Ngo Mon Gate. This massive gate is right outside the Hue Citadel and it was used as a royal viewing platform for many years. Next up is the Throne Palace, which is easily reached by the Trung Dao bridge that goes over the Thai Dich.
Behind the Throne Palace are the two Mandarin buildings that were used as the administrative offices for the Emperor. There are no offices there nowadays, but you will find souvenir shops filled with items for you to purchase.
When you exit the Mandarin buildings, you will find yourself at the Royal Reading Room. This is where all the Emperors spent their time reading and writing letters. The Dien Tho Residence is comprised of many different areas including the Dien Tho Palace, the Tinh Minh Building, and the Phuoc Tho Temple.
When you enter the Dien Tho Palace, you will see that it still contains the items that were there during the last Emperor’s, Bao Dai, reign. However, the very front apartment holds the possessions of Queen Mother Tu Cuong. She lived there during the first half of the 20th century and you may have an eerie feeling when you see all her belongings up close.
The To Mieu and Hung Mieu Compound have two temples, The To Mieu and Hung To Mieu. The former is where all the Nguyen Emperors are honored, while the latter is where people can honor the memory of the parents of Emperor Gia Long.
The last stop for many people within Imperial City is the Hien Lam Pavilion. There are nine urns in front of this pavilion, and they are there to honor all the Nguyen Emperors who found success during their reign. Each urn was cast during the 1830s and they each weigh between just under two tons to up to three tons.
The rest of the pavilion is designed to remember all the commoners who helped the Emperors during their reigns. There is a gate near the pavilion for you to exit from and it is only approximately seven hundred feet from where you entered through the Ngo Man Gate when you arrived.
