Itinerary
Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone or DMZ divided the North and South Vietnamese territories after the French Indochina War and became the crucial battlefield during the Vietnam War. The DMZ is located at the 17th parallel, a few kilometers away from Dong Ha, the capital city of Quang Tri Province.
The Demilitarized Zone officially ceased to exist after the reunification of Vietnam. The whole area is still dangerous even decades after the Vietnam War due to the number of undetonated explosives. South Vietnamese Army and American military bases, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese hideouts, village tunnels and other war remnants remained within the Demilitarized Zone.Â

- La Vang Holy Land – It is an important pilgrimage destination for Roman Catholics in Vietnam. The La Vang Holy Land is located in Hai Lang District, Quang Tri Province. Though what makes the place is that, it is believed that Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, appeared next to the three banyan trees in 1798 and to honor her, a church was erected.
- Rock Pile Hill – One of the most interesting US military bases within the DMZ. Rock Pile Hill served as a watchtower to observe the activities of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. The American troops saw it as a sanctuary as the place saved them from wild animals roaming around the jungle and it is extremely difficult for opposing army to get to the high place without getting exposed.
- Dakrong Bridge – The bridge is an important branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail which leads to the controversial Battle of Hamburger Hill. Dakrong Bridge is a vital route of the Ho Chi Minh Trail to move troops, supplies and munitions.
- Khe Sanh Combat Base (upon request +35USD) – The largest Marine Base Camp in the Vietnam’s Demilitarized Zone. The seizure of Khe Sanh Combat Base by the Vietnamese People’s Army in early 1968 believed to be the turning point of the Vietnam War. The combat base still has the bunkers, tanks, fighter aircraft and a small museum displaying historical images and weapons.
- Hien Luong Bridge (Ben Hai River) – The only true demarcation line between the North and South Vietnam according to set at the Geneva Conference of 1954. According to the Geneva Agreement, the northern part of Vietnam became the Democratic Republic of Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh while the southern part of Vietnam became the Independent State of Vietnam led by the last Nguyen Emperor Bao Dai. This explains Hien Luong Bridge being painted with 2 colors representing 2 former territories but then got reunified after.
- Vinh Moc Tunnels: This tunnel was built in 1965 with 10m underground depth and used till 1972 by villagers of Vinh Moc to hide the American forces during the war. The total length of the tunnels is nearly 2,000m long with six entrances to the top of hills and seven entrances to the South China sea. Nowadays, Vinh Moc Tunnels are a tourist attraction when they travel in Vietnam
