The Pub With Cold Beer is located near Rao Con River, on the legendary Ho Chi Minh Highway, in Quang Binh province. It is a family-run establishment. In 2015, The Guardian newspaper in the UK dubbed the proprietor a “local legend.” The Pub With Cold Beer has a relaxed and welcoming ambience. Chairs are strewn over the grounds, while hammocks swing softly next to the pool table.
The “garden to table” experience is what distinguishes this “pub”. Everything is grown on site, from the vegetables to the peanuts to the roaming chickens. The beer is cool and pleasant, especially after the long walk out to the pub, which includes crossing a river. 6, Bomb Crater Bar
Bomb Crater Bar is a great place to stop on your way by or to relax with a drink in the afternoon. It is located on the Old French Highway, right on the Son River, about 3 kilometers from Phong Nha Village. During the American war, the ground where the bar now stands was used as a fuel depot. It was brutally bombed as a result, including a 2000lb bomb in the early 70’s that produced the crater that gave the bar its name. The bomb crater is only a few meters deep now, but it was formerly much deeper. Because it is situated on the river’s flood plain, it has been filled in during the almost 50 years after it was formed by river sediment, vegetation, and erosion.
The layout is straightforward, with a wooden sign directing visitors to a small driveway leading to a clearing surrounded by bamboo groves. This is the ideal place to stop along the route between Phong Nha Village and the Bong Lai Valley for cold drinks and excellent service. At this wonderful spot for a sundowner drink, you may relax in a hammock, go river kayaking, or hang out with the bar’s resident water buffalo.
